Elevating the role of set and setting in shaping human experience across diverse contexts

The Set & Setting Collaborative is a multidisciplinary effort within the broader Intentional Spaces Initiative, dedicated to exploring how psychological, social, and environmental factors shape transformative human experiences. Rooted in psychedelic research but extending across healthcare, education, and the arts, the Collaborative supports evidence-based projects that spark clinical innovation, scholarly inquiry, and cultural understanding.

Our Work

We advance understanding of how set and setting shape human experience through collaboration, knowledge exchange, and creative translation. Our working groups connect scientists, artists, clinicians, and cultural leaders to turn insight into action.

Research & Knowledge
We study how context influences transformation—linking evidence across disciplines and translating science into real-world understanding.

Design & Environment
We explore how environments—physical, sensory, and social—shape human experience. Drawing from evidence-based design and emerging neuroscience, our work bridges research and practice to create spaces that foster connection, creativity, and well-being.

Education & Practice
We share what we learn—through programs, publications, and exchanges that help practitioners bring these ideas to life.ConveningsFrom summits to workshops, we create spaces for collaboration and connection—where ideas evolve, and new partnerships begin.

Storytelling & Amplification
We highlight set and setting work already happening across the field—sharing stories, frameworks, and creative media that inspire collective impact.

Research Collaboration

The Collaborative was launched in 2022 through the convergence of three pioneering university research projects:

  • Johns Hopkins University: Investigating the therapeutic potential of music in psychedelic-assisted treatments.
  • McGill University: Exploring personalized music and mindfulness practices tailored to individual needs.
  • University of California, San Francisco (UCSF): Examining individual responses to psychedelics, with set and setting as key controlled variables.

Together, these projects anchor the Collaborative’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and evidence-based approaches to understanding how environment, mindset, and context shape human experience.

Who We Are

The Set & Setting Collaborative brings together researchers, clinicians, cultural leaders, artists, educators, and philanthropists to explore how set—our mindset, expectations, and preparation—and setting—our environment, culture, and design—shape transformational human experiences. While these ideas are rooted in psychedelic research, our broader mission is to apply them across diverse fields to amplify well-being, creativity, and connection.

At the center of this work is our Kitchen Cabinet: a trusted leadership group providing clarity, care, and vision. Their lived experiences and professional expertise ensure the Collaborative remains grounded, inclusive, and forward-thinking.

Fred Barrett

Intentional Spaces Initiative - Set & Setting Page Image

Frederick Barrett is a cognitive neuroscientist with training in behavioral pharmacology. Dr. Barrett has been conducting psychedelic research at Johns Hopkins University since 2013, and his research in heathy participants and in patients with mood and substance use disorders focuses on the psychological and neurological mechanisms underlying the enduring therapeutic and other effects of psychedelic drugs. In 2017, he received an NIH “R03” grant as Principal Investigator to investigate biological mechanisms of psilocybin effects, the first federally funded research since the 1970s administering a classic psychedelic to people with psychedelic effects as the primary focus. He developed the first comprehensive questionnaire to measure subjective aspects of challenging experiences encountered with psilocybin. He also published the first studies in humans characterizing the enduring effects of psilocybin on the brain (up to a month after psilocybin administration), the effects of psilocybin on a brain structure called the claustrum (which has been proposed to variously mediate consciousness and cognition), the effects of LSD on the brain’s response to music, and the effects of the atypical hallucinogen salvinorin A on human brain network function. He is currently leading a clinical trial to investigate the use of psilocybin to treat patients with major depressive disorder and co-occurring alcohol use disorder, and he is leading a number of ongoing studies aimed at better understanding the psychological, biological, and neural mechanisms underlying therapeutic efficacy of psychedelic drugs.

Robin Carhart-Harris

Intentional Spaces Initiative - Set & Setting Page Image

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris is a leading researcher in the fields of human neuroscience and psychopharmacology. He is best known for his groundbreaking research on how psychedelic substances affect the brain and how they could be used as treatments for mental health issues such as depression.

Dr. Carhart-Harris is deeply interested in studying different states of consciousness and has been instrumental in renewing scientific interest in psychedelics as tools for exploring the mind and treating mental disorders.

His work has not only expanded our understanding of how the brain works but has also paved the way for innovative approaches to treating mental health problems. Through his research, Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris continues to shape the field of psychedelic science and its implications for human psychology, neuroscience and well-being.

Dr Carhart-Harris is the Ralph Metzner Distinguished Professor of Neurology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California San Francisco. Robin moved to UCSF in 2021. In April 2019, he founded the world’s first Center for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, where he now holds an Honorary Professorship.

He has designed multimodal human brain imaging studies with psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, and DMT, and several clinical trials of psilocybin therapy for severe mental illnesses, including three trials of psilocybin therapy for depression and additional trials of psilocybin therapy for anorexia and fibromyalgia syndrome. Robin was named among the top 31 medical scientists by The Times in 2020, and was listed in TIME magazine’s ‘100 Next’ in 2021, a list of rising stars shaping the future. Also in 2021, Robin was publicly voted psychedelic researcher of the year – in inaugural awards organized by Microdose, and in 2023, he was listed in Vox magazine’s ‘Future Perfect 50’, a list of change-makers positively impacting the future.

In collaboration with the translational neuroscience center, Neuroscape, Dr. Carhart-Harris’ lab are currently focused on a deep fMRI and EEG investigation of the brain action of psilocybin, and separately, a large study that aims to test whether psilocybin synergises with contextual factors to drive psychological responses. His colleagues and collaborators at Imperial College London are completing two separate trials involving psilocybin therapy for anorexia and fibromyalgia syndrome as well as neuroimaging studies with DMT and 5-MeO-DMT.
